- ➤ Gilbert couple Blair and Cindy Packard started nonprofit Care for Life, which teaches self-reliance in Mozambique villages by offering education on health, sanitation, and income skills — efforts that have lowered infant and maternal death rates in the four communities it serves. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ HD South will host historian Steve Hoza’s free talk on Arizona’s 24 World War II POW camps from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 17. The event (open to ages 12 and older with registration) will showcase POW artifacts and details of the 1944 escape from Papago Park. Gilbert Independent
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Gilbert Public Schools hosted campus tours for sixth graders through the Level Up initiative last January. The program allowed students to visit junior high campuses, explore classrooms, and meet school staff (including bands and cheer teams) to ease their transition. Gilbert Independent
