CULTURE NEWS

  • The Arizona Republic’s 'Gilbert Goons' documentary—made by Michael Chow, Robert Anglen and Elena Santa Cruz—has been named a finalist in the local video storytelling category of the Scripps Howard Journalism Awards, and the winner will be announced online on June 10.  The Arizona Republic

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Gilbert teens from Chandler schools and one Tempe teen from Gilbert Public Schools were named among the 20 Flinn Scholarship winners. The awards will help pay for college and bring extra benefits—like study abroad and mentor programs—when college starts this fall.  Gilbert Sun News
  • Fifth and sixth graders from elementary schools competed last week at Mesquite Junior High in the district Battle of the Books contest. Greenfield Elementary—whose team included Kaylee Bezy, Maycee Bezy, Norah Thompson and librarian Heather Meaux—won after tiebreaker questions and will move on to regional competitions at Chandler Public Library on May 7.  Gilbert Independent
  • Gilbert Public Schools appointed new principals at Desert Ridge Junior High and Augusta Ranch Elementary on Tuesday. The governing board unanimously approved the selections for the upcoming 2025 to 2026 school year.  Gilbert Independent

  • Gilbert officials said House Bill 2720, signed by Gov. Katie Hobbs in May 2024, allowed up to two casitas on single-family homes and aimed to boost long-term rentals but instead spurred more short-term rentals and reduced local planning control + residents report that casitas built near property lines are challenging neighborhood rules.  Gilbert Independent

  • On April 16, an entity linked to Gabriel G. Saia Jr. bought Portillo's at 2650 S. Market St. in Gilbert for $3 million from an entity managed by Macerich—without recorded debt—and the 7,670-square-foot restaurant built in 2022 sits on 2.90 acres with a double-lane drive-thru and about 105 parking spaces.  Gilbert Independent
