  • Bongiorno Bagels in Gilbert and Luana's Coffee and Beer in Phoenix are named among Yelp's top cheap eats by Yelp Elite members—Bongiorno Bagels is praised for its New York-style bagels while Luana's offers a variety of affordable breakfast and lunch options.  The Arizona Republic
  • Pima Federal Credit Union acquired the Republic Bank building at 1417 W. Elliot Road in Gilbert for $1.31 million on May 7—regulatory approval was received in March. The one story, 3911 square foot building built in 2006 on 1.05 acres will help the credit union expand its financial services for members.  Gilbert Independent

  • Gilbert police say Wyatt Ford was indicted on a second-degree murder charge after he fatally shot unarmed landscaper Manuel Vega Lopez + Lopez had been hired to trim trees at the rental home following a dispute over alleged trailer vandalism on May 19.  AZ Family

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Director Debbie McKnight marked her two-year service at Animal Care and Control by outlining major improvements, including opening a new East Shelter and launching the PetSmart Everyday Adoption Center + the agency plans a new West Shelter and modernized operations to boost adoption rates. She said these changes help save lives and serve the community better.  Maricopa County
  • Gilbert Fire & Rescue Department invites residents aged 18 or older to join its Community Assistance Volunteers team and help with both emergency and non-emergency tasks. Volunteers will complete training before committing to two four-hour shifts per month and must have a valid driver's license, be able to carry a 10-foot ladder + pass a background and drug screening.  Gilbert Independent
  • The Arizona Department of Transportation said that westbound lanes on Loop 202 between Gilbert and Cooper roads will close Saturday from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. for a widening project—drivers should use alternate routes like Pecos or Germann roads and note that lanes on Loop 101 near 51st Avenue will also close from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for bridge work.  AZ Family
  • The town of Gilbert received a clean bill of financial health for fiscal year 2023-24 — three separate audit reports confirmed its sound financial management.  Gilbert Independent
