CRIME NEWS

  • Preston Lord’s parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit on Tuesday in Maricopa County Superior Court against Jacob Meisner’s parents—claiming they knew about his violent past and failed to supervise him even though he was linked to several attacks before the fatal beating at a Halloween party in 2023.  AZ Family

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Maricopa County agencies, including Economic Development teams and the Rapid Response Program coordinator, teamed up to quickly match laid-off workers with similar jobs from new or expanding businesses. The program, funded by federal and local sources, has held several targeted hiring events—more meetings are planned to expand these reemployment efforts.  Maricopa County

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Gilbert Public Schools board approved a new student code on Tuesday that bans cellphones for K-8 students during the school day — exceptions are allowed only for emergencies. The rules will take effect in the fall.  AZ Family

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Board of Supervisors approved a contract today with BerryDunn & the firm will conduct an independent review of Maricopa County elections & the review will help guide improvements in the voting process.  Maricopa County
  • Maricopa County’s Human Services Workforce Development Division held a four-hour virtual event in 2024 to help remote workers affected by layoffs with resume workshops, interview practice, and unemployment guidance—207 people attended and the service received high survey ratings. The program later expanded to offer both virtual and on-site rapid response sessions for job seekers across several counties.  Maricopa County
  • Maricopa County Human Services Workforce Development Division is offering free CPR, AED and First Aid classes each month at the county’s One Stop Centers—helping both county staff and community members gain a needed certification. The program uses a mix of self-study and in-person practice for a streamlined training process.  Maricopa County

HEALTH NEWS

  • Maricopa County Human Services piloted a program to help low-income seniors stay safe at home by offering mobility aids and home modifications—such as scooters, wheelchairs, ramps, and grab bars—through an 18-month ARPA-funded project. The program, which served 159 seniors, improved safety and independent mobility for participants.  Maricopa County
