Good morning, Gilbert.

Gilbert launched a Trap, Neuter and Return pilot program to reimburse nonprofits for trapping cats on private property—only four groups were approved and just two submitted receipts, leaving advocates to argue that the town’s ban on trapping and feeding on public property limits the program's impact. Residents and cat advocates say that without a town-wide approach, the stray cat population will continue to grow and affect neighborhoods.

Gilbert town officials have reminded residents that non-aerial fireworks are allowed on private property from June 24-July 6 with the homeowner's permission — using fireworks on public property or outside these dates may lead to a $1,000 fine.

At a long meeting last week, the Town Council rejected a plan to rezone land at Modera Gabriella Pointe for 335 apartments with retail and a proposal to cut public space at Tuscany at Gabriella Pointe because they feared a drop in tax revenue — while they approved a plan to boost apartment units to 367 at Bella Storia. The council’s decisions show its focus on balancing housing needs with preserving commercial revenue opportunities as Gilbert grows.

Today, the Gilbert Town Council denied a request to change the plan at the Tuscany at Gabriella Pointe apartment complex — the proposal would have converted common open space into private yards.
