COMMUNITY NEWS

  • American Legion Post 39 hosted an evening of bingo, food and community support to raise funds for Gilbert Fire & Rescue Department’s back-to-school shopping event — an effort that helped local kids get ready for school. Tickets were sold in person and a 50/50 raffle ran with the kitchen opening at 4:30 p.m. and bingo beginning at 5 p.m.  Gilbert Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gilbert Public Schools looked back on over 100 years of first-day traditions by comparing school days in 1968, 1982, 2006 and 2025, showing how classroom tools changed from chalkboards and radio hits to smartboards and digital devices—reflecting shifts in both teaching methods and pop culture.  Gilbert Independent
  • Gilbert Public Schools’ Governing Board will meet in executive session Tuesday to plan the search for a new superintendent after Superintendent Shane McCord announced his retirement in May. Board President Chad Thompson said the board will discuss key criteria to move the selection process forward.  Gilbert Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Leapfrog Group rated 12 East Valley hospitals on patient safety and found that some earned top marks—while others received only adequate scores. HonorHealth received four A grades, but facilities from Dignity Health and Banner Health in Mesa and Gilbert got lower scores, showing that safety issues like infections and falls remain a challenge.  Gilbert Sun News
